Want GOD, but not Church? PDF Print E-mail

You're not alone.  Millions of people sincerely want to grow spiritually, but many rarely if ever attend church services of any kind.  If this sounds like you, there is hope and help...

ImageThere are almost as many reasons why people don’t go to church as there are people.  Some have been hurt or disappointed by church problems or abuse.  Others don’t trust clergy or church leadership.  Many have discovered hidden motivations like greed or ambition and different kinds of hypocrisy.  A big percentage feel that the church hasn’t lived up to its promises to do good in the world and has, instead, sometimes been a force for evil.  For some, it just feels like a waste of time or an annoying social event.  There are even those who feel like their faith would actually be healthier outside the walls of the church.  A large number of people simply fail to see how church makes a real difference — does it really matter or change anything?

If you listen carefully to all the reasons that people don’t want church, there is one thing you will not hear.  No one says the problem is Jesus.  That’s because most of us know deep down inside that all these church problem’s break Jesus’ heart.  How can we know that?  Because the problems with organized religion in Jesus’ day hurt him deeply and even angered him.  He wasn’t shy about pointing out the sickness of religious leaders and their abuse of their followers.*

So if Jesus didn’t come to make us into mild-mannered church goers, what did he come for?
The good news is that Jesus didn’t come to sell us church.  Although some people use Jesus’ name to say “be nice” and “go to church,” nothing could be farther from the true message of Jesus of Nazareth.  So if Jesus didn’t come to make us into mild-mannered church goers, what did he come for?  In his own words: “I came so you can have real and eternal life, more and better life than you ever dreamed of.”†

In other words, Jesus came to start a revolution — forever changing life on planet earth.  For centuries since he has been calling people to “come, follow me”‡ on his amazing and aggressive mission to remake the world.  He calls his followers into a lifestyle of a deep connection to God that overflows into the lives of others for their real good.  This is not about becoming a boring person.  Nor is it about knowing certain thoughts about God or keeping a list of rules.  It’s not even about regularly attending a worship service.  It’s about becoming a traveler with God himself in his  grassroots movement to transform our grey existence into vibrant, bold living.

ImageThousands of people who want God but not church are joining Jesus’ revolution.  They are learning a radical lifestyle of purpose and meaning right where they live — among their friends, family, and coworkers.  They are courageously engaging people’s problems through brave and innovative action.  They are connecting with others around dinner tables, beside backyard grills, in living rooms, and many other places.

If you’re ready for this revolution in your life, we’d like to help:

What We Will Do

  • Pray with you so you can connect directly to Jesus — no middle men between you and God.

  • Provide a “seed” of principles and practices that you will be able to build upon for your own unique expression of the revolution.

  • Give support and relationship and practical help for you to live Jesus’ revolution in your relationships, calling, and lifestyle.

  • Assist you in gathering a grassroots group of like-minded revolutionaries for mutual support and a unified mission to make a difference in the world.

What We Won’t Do

  • We won’t try to take the place of God in your life.  Only Jesus can tell a revolutionary where to go and what to do.

  • We’ll listen to you and help you listen to God.  Really.

  • We won’t hand you an irrelevant “cookie-cutter” package of things you must do and believe.

  • We won’t leave you alone without the support, friendship and resources you need to live out your faith.

  • We won’t attempt to get you into a church.  Spiritual community is an important part of life, but there are many alternatives to traditional church.  If you decide you'd like to be a Revolutionary in a traditional church, that's up to you and fine with us.  But we'd like you to know about other types of Christian community as well.  The point is, we’ll help you find a community that’s right for you.  (If you’re already a church member, click here.)

Here's some ways we can help you through this website:

  1. Relationship: Often the key for people to become what they want to be is connection with others.  Hopefully you will find many people you can connect with on this site.  You might start by checking out the Find a Revolutionary Directory and search for someone in or near your location.  If you still need assistance getting connected, email This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it and the site administrator will help you.  Register with our site to post your own directory listing and find out more about how you can add your own conent to our community.

  2. Narrative: Sometimes it just helps to know other people's stories.  At least you will discover you're not crazy, or if you are crazy, you're not alone.  Learn about the story of the Original Revolutionary Jesus Christ.  If you think you know him, but have never spent time in his story, you might have a watered-down, domesticated, or corrupted version.  Also, check out Track the Movement to read about how the Revolution is impacting the lives of others.

  3. Resources: We've prepared a list of books on several topics that might be helpful for your journey.  Some of these books you can buy through your local bookstore or Amazon.com, other e-books are available for free download through our site.  Visit Books & Resources to see what we've got.

What If I Go to Church?

While Jesus critiques organized religion, he is definitely not against traditional forms of church or people who go to church.  Many people in churches today also are living out Jesus’ Revolution.  If you are one of these, God bless you.  May you continue to serve him as his radical follower where you are.  Feel free to contact us or use our resources to help you be a revolutionary for Christ.

Scott BartchyScott Bartchy is a radical. He believes in a subversive system that embraces those on the fringes of our society and seeks to establish a new way of life that goes against the status quo.

Kind of like Jesus.

Bartchy, currently the Director of the Center for the Study of Religions at UCLA, notes a great gap between the original, early form of church in the first three hundred years of Christianity, and the modern concept of doing church today.
