I know. A captivating blog post title if there ever was one. It seems a gentleman associated with The Restored Church of God has decided to take blogging, and other online means of generating community, to task. In fact, here is his summary: Should teenagers and others in the Church express themselves to the world through blogs? Because of the obvious dangers; the clear biblical principles that apply; the fact that it gives one a voice; that it is almost always idle words; that teens often do not think before they do; that it is acting out of boredom; and it is filled with appearances of evil—blogging is simply not to be done in the Church. It should be clear that it is unnecessary and in fact dangerous on many levels. Let me emphasize that no one—including adults—should have a blog or personal website (unless it is for legitimate business purposes). Wow. Pretty strong words. (You can read the rest here) The sadder thing about this is that The Register (technology news site in the UK) has written an article whereby they paint all Christians with the same brush. Their first sentence sets the tone: “Blathering on blogs is un-Christian, an Evangelical church has warned.” What they don’t mention, probably out of ignorance rather than purposefully, is that this “Evangelical church” is more a cult than it is Christian (The Restored Church of God is a splinter group that broke off from the World Church of God when it made serious corrections to false doctrines - read about the World Church of God here). This problem is similar to how Christians are lumped together with Mormons and Catholics in the minds of many. One more reason why it is important for us to educate others as to what we really believe and not how Hollywood or the mass media has portrayed us. Which, to me, is a GOOD reason to blog.
