You Should Get Involved in Darfur
Written by Emergent Village
Thursday, 19 October 2006

Today Emergent Village board member Brian McLaren joined the Southern Baptist Convention’s Richard Land, the National Association of Evangelicals’ Ted Haggard, Rob Bell, Lauren Winner, and others in issuing a joint statement to President Bush urging him to take immediate action on the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Hands These Evangelicals for Darfur are “calling for an immediate conference with the President to discuss economic sanctions and the intervention of a United Nations peacekeeping force in the war-torn region.”

From the website:

To date, more than 400,000 people have been killed. 2.5 million displaced. Countless more have been raped, maimed, and tortured: Men, women, and children created in God's image, innocents all. Ending the atrocities will require your personal leadership in supporting the deployment of a strong U.N. peacekeeping force and multilateral economic sanctions. While we often disagree on matters of politics, we are united in the belief that your intervention can make the critical difference in Darfur. We join together now to urge you, in the words of Proverbs 24:11-12, to "rescue those being led away to death." We pledge to do everything we can to rally support in both Congress and the U.N. to support your leadership in ending the horror in Darfur.

Subversive Scott Bartchy

Scott BartchyScott Bartchy is a radical. He believes in a subversive system that embraces those on the fringes of our society and seeks to establish a new way of life that goes against the status quo.

Kind of like Jesus.

Bartchy, currently the Director of the Center for the Study of Religions at UCLA, notes a great gap between the original, early form of church in the first three hundred years of Christianity, and the modern concept of doing church today.
