the proverbs 31 church

i’ve been thinking alot lately about the church. what the church is and what it isn’t and how to describe the difference. see, i get into a lot of trouble because when i criticize the institution, people hear me criticize the people… the church.

there has been much talk lately about the importance of church model (and i’ve been right in the middle of that talk)

but the church isn’t a model.

a model is primarily concerned with her appearance, her income, her standing in the fashion community, photo opportunities, shooting locations and times…

a bride is primarily concerned with her husband

a model is about looking the most attractive for the purpose of selling something

a bride is about being attractive for her lover

many are members of the bride (as my fingers are members of me)… everyone who has made Jesus their master. and they are with the bride and in the bride wherever they go. the bride includes those who went before and those who come after.

but many who are members of the bride have found themselves deeply engaged with a model. one who calls herself church, she is not the church. she is defined by all of the things a model is defined by, not the least of which is extravegance. the model is desperate because she sees that fewer and fewer people are coming to her. she is spending more and more to look more and more attractive. she is working overtime to stem the exodus of those who have seen through her guise.

i even saw a model claiming to have “the God i’m looking for” yesterday. it doesn’t matter which god it is i’m looking for, she’s got him. or is it that i’ve looked everywhere else but not found him because he’s really here with her. (interesting aside, there are six or seven of these models within about a six block radius so competition is very high.)

another local model is spending $6 mill on a major make-over. she’s building “God’s front porch”… which of course implies that God himself lives in her hand made temple. but the truth is that almost 100% of this particular model’s popularity comes from people who have left their own has-been model to join with this much flashier girl…

there are many many good men and women who belong to the bride but have become very confused about who she is. they have joined themselves to a model and are doggedly pursuing her own interests. many of these good people even travel to visit other, more successful models hoping to learn some of her techniques, stave off the inevitable, and perhaps save their own ailing model…

but the bride is not a model, she is a host of people who love their husband.

the bride is not worried about survival.

the bride is not worried about attracting more people,

she is beautiful in ways that only the wretched can recognize…

and these wretched people are clamoring to join with her so they can meet this most amazing husband she loves so much

and be cured of their wretchedness

the bride only concerns herself with pleasing her husband

and that is enough for him

it’s all he asks

so if you find yourself working to sustain a model

stop

and remember the bride to whom you may already belong

she loves you

we love you

Subversive Scott Bartchy

Scott BartchyScott Bartchy is a radical. He believes in a subversive system that embraces those on the fringes of our society and seeks to establish a new way of life that goes against the status quo.

Kind of like Jesus.

Bartchy, currently the Director of the Center for the Study of Religions at UCLA, notes a great gap between the original, early form of church in the first three hundred years of Christianity, and the modern concept of doing church today.
