As I was driving to work on yesterday afternoon, a black bear ran across the road ahead of me and into the brush. I slowed down to see if I could get a closer look. Sure enough, the bear was standing in the brush and was looking back over its shoulder. It was a beautiful animal. Its fur was jet black. As the sun hit its coat, it looked blue.
I thought of King David, when he was just a lad. Most people, who have heard Bible stories, have heard about David and Goliath. When David wanted to go out and fight Goliath, King Saul thought he was too young. David told the King, "Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." (1 Samuel 17:36-37) David believed that God had proved his ability to deliver him from Goliath.
As I saw the bear in the brush, I was reminded that the same God, who created the bear, and everything else, has the power to deliver me from any circumstance. He has proved it over and over. Some might say that God doesn't always deliver us. To that, my answer must be the same as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego as they faced the king Nebuchadnezzar and the blazing furnace. They believed God would deliver them. "But even if he doesn't, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up." (Daniel 3:18)
So, even if God chooses not to deliver me, I will trust in him.
