Who do you think Jesus is?
An exploration into the seven signs of Jesus from his biography by John.

Turning the Water into Wine [John 2:1-11]

Three days after Jesus recruited his first disciples, there was a wedding in the city of Cana in the region of Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, and Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the reception. When the wine for the feast ran out, Jesus' mother told him, "They're out of wine."

Jesus replied, "Dear woman, what does that have to do with you and me? My time hasn't come yet."

His mother told the waiters, "Do whatever he says."

Six stone water pots were sitting there to be used in the Jew's purification rituals.  Each one could hold twenty or thirty gallons.

Jesus said, "Fill these pots with water." So the waiters filled them to the brim.

Then he told them, "Now, take some to the master of ceremonies of the reception." So they took it.

When the master of ceremonies tasted the water, which had become wine, he didn't know where it had come from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew).

The master of ceremonies called the bridegroom over to the side and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first.  After the guest have drunk a lot, then you serve the cheap wine.  But you have waited until now to serve the good wine!"

This was Jesus' first sign, which he did in the city of Cana in Galilee.  He revealed his true nature and power; and his followers believed in him.

Three Simple Questions:

What is this sign saying about human nature?

What is this sign saying about our common needs?

What is this sign telling us about Jesus?
